Compton Castle in South Devon

Romance and history in our very own castle (well almost)

You can’t come to Compton without visiting our local castle. Just a short walk away from Brownscombe, Compton Castle is a dramatic fortified manor house with a pretty formal garden.

The National Trust site describes it as ‘a rare survivor’… ‘a medieval fortress with high curtain walls, towers and a portcullis’. The castle is still lived in by the Gilbert family (it’s been their family home for nearly 600 years, including Sir Humphrey Gilbert, half-brother to Sir Walter Raleigh).

The castle is open to visitors from Tuesday to Thursday from Easter to October half term, and bank holidays too. Check the Compton Castle website for details.
